Meet Robert and Karen Hoffman, the proud owners of Humbug Holiday Lighting of Sioux Empire. As lifelong residents of South Dakota, Robert and Karen bring a deep love for their community and a commitment to quality service to every holiday lighting project.
Karen has spent the last 25 years as a dedicated pharmacist, while Robert has worked as a marketing data analyst for 22 years. Together, they have balanced successful careers with raising a wonderful family. They are the proud parents of four children: Christian (married to Matlyn, with a son, Raylan), Wilson (engaged to Molly), Tobin, and Sage. With one child still in high school and another in college, family remains their greatest joy and priority.
Robert and Karen’s roots run deep in South Dakota. Karen grew up on a family farm and ranch outside of Kimball, and Robert was raised in Parkston, where his parents ran an agriculture business. Before attending South Dakota State University, where he met Karen, Robert served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Seabees for five years. The couple recently celebrated 25 years of marriage and have called Sioux Falls and Tea their home since their college days. They love the area’s sense of community, where neighbors are always ready to lend a helping hand.
Starting Humbug Holiday Lighting of Sioux Empire is a dream come true for Robert and Karen. After decades of working for others, they are excited to create a business of their own that reflects their values and dedication to quality. They are passionate about building a legacy for their children and providing exceptional service to their community. Humbug Holiday Lighting allows them to combine their skills and experiences in a way that directly impacts their neighbors, creates new opportunities, and brings fulfillment to their careers.
The Sioux Empire is rich with unique landmarks and attractions that Robert and Karen are proud to highlight. From the cascading waters of Falls Park in downtown Sioux Falls to the stunning quartzite cliffs of Palisades State Park and the historic charm of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, this region offers endless beauty and adventure. Other local treasures include the Great Plains Zoo, the Butterfly House & Aquarium, and the culturally vibrant historic downtown district of Sioux Falls.
South Dakota State University (SDSU), located in Brookings, is the state’s largest and oldest university. It is a hub of education, research, and culture in the region. The campus features iconic landmarks like the Campanile, and hosts various events, including Jackrabbits athletic games. SDSU also houses the South Dakota Art Museum and the McCrory Gardens, both of which are significant cultural and educational attractions in the area. Brookings is also home to the wonderful Children’s Museum of South Dakota which sparks imagination and learning for all children and their grown-ups through play, creativity, and discovery.
Community involvement is a cornerstone for the Hoffmans. In 2011, Robert founded a non-profit soccer club, and both he and Karen have been deeply involved ever since. Karen has served in various roles, from fundraiser coordinator to marketing director, while Robert has held leadership positions such as president, director of coaching, and tournament director. Their commitment to serving others and fostering community spirit is evident in everything they do.
